Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthroplogy, Germany


Position Description:
Applications are invited for 2 PhD scholarships to work with the
Integrative Primate Socio-Ecology Group (IPSE) at the Max Planck
Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Leipzig, Germany on the
evolution of social relationships in wild macaques.

The first project will focus on feeding competition and female social
relationships in pigtail macaques (Macaca nemestrina leonina). This
study will be carried out at the joint field site of Stony Brook
University and IPSE in Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary, Northeast
Thailand where IPSE oversees macaque research.

The second project is a joint study between IPSE and the German
Primate Center (DPZ) in Göttingen and will concentrate on social
relationships of male and female Siberut macaques (Macaca siberu) at
the DPZ field site in the Siberut Conservation Project, Mentawai
Islands, Indonesia.

Qualifications/Experience:
The candidate should hold a master degree in Biology or Physical
Anthropology and have a strong background in Behavioral Ecology or
Animal Behavior. Fieldwork in both projects will take approximately 2
years and the work in both field sites is physically very demanding.
Hence, interested individuals should be physically fit and have
extensive previous experience with field work in the tropics.

Salary/funding:
Two scholarships are available (each 1,100€ per month), both are
initially restricted to two years, with the possibility of extension.
