Research Assistant
Hiring Organization:
Wildlife Conservation Research Unit, University of Oxford
Position Description:
I am looking for volunteers to assist data collection at three sites
in Budongo Forest, Uganda. Volunteers will work with local field
assistants and follow chimpanzees through the forest, collecting
behavioural observations and urine samples. Data collection will take
place between August 2007 and March 2008.
Budongo Forest is protected forest reserve with diverse flora and
fauna surrounded by expanding agricultural communities. Approximately
500 chimpanzees are thought to live within the forest.
Research examines the impact of human disturbance and environmental
change on stress and disease in chimpanzees.
Volunteers will be working at two sites, run by the Jane Goodall
Institute, and possibly with a community of chimpanzees in a forest
fragment outside the main forest.
Qualifications/Experience:
The ideal candidate will have previous experience studying or working
with primates, previous field experience, and an undergraduate degree
(or is working towards one). Preference will also be given to
individuals who can commit to a period of three months or more.
However, enthusiasm and commitment are more important than
background. Couples can also apply.
Salary/funding:
Funding is not available, so volunteers will have to cover the
flights and living expenses (about $20 a week). However,
accommodation will be provided.
Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals,
lodging):
Lodging provided.
Term of Appointment:
3 months - 6 months
Application Deadline:
applications can be sent at any time
