Research Specialist in the cognitive and communicative
competencies of chimpanzees

Position Description:
We are currently seeking to fill a research specialist position at
the Yerkes National Primate Research Center in Atlanta, Georgia in a
behavioral laboratory studying the cognitive and communicative
competencies of chimpanzees and their neurobiological correlates.
The responsibilities of the position includes conducting behavioral
and cognitive research with chimpanzees, engaging in standard
husbandry and positive reinforcement training with chimpanzees,
assisting in data collection of neurobiological measures from
magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography, and data
entry and analysis. Candidate will be required to help with general
laboratory activities including ordering and preparing food
reinforcements, as well as cleaning and maintaining laboratory space
and equipment. Candidate must be able to move freely about the
outside of animal enclosures, operate enclosure doors and locks, and
manually deliver food and other rewards to the chimpanzees. Once
trained, the candidate will be expected to carry out duties and
safely work around chimpanzees with minimal supervision.
Qualifications/Experience:
Minimum B.A. or B.S. in psychology, anthropology, biology, or related
field. Preference will be given to individuals with experience
working with great apes and in particular, chimpanzees. Experience
with non-invasive imaging technology desired but not required. Basic
computer skills required to run computer-based psychological
experiments. Candidate must be able to work outdoors in extreme
weather conditions in order to maintain consistent training and
testing routines. Observational skills required to code behavioral
data both real-time and from video tapes. May be required to take
specific precautions against biohazards and/or be immunized against
potentially hazardous agents.
Must be willing to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Must be
able to work independently as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
Salary/funding:
Minimum salary $28,000 plus benefits.
Term of Appointment:
1 year +
