PostDoc opportunity in animal cognition
Project: Becoming a visual expert. The role of experience and
domain-general mechanisms in pigeons
This is a 3-year appointment available from 1 July 2007, or as soon as
possible thereafter.
With this project we want to examine in pigeons the role of developmental
and training-specific experience in the recognition of static,
configurally complex, natural and artificial objects, as well as in
biological motion perception. The project is supported by the Austrian
Science Fund (FWF) and is based at the Department of Neurobiology and
Cognition Research, University of Vienna. It will involve behavioral
experiments with pigeons (Columba livia) in the laboratory and in large
aviaries. See the following website for more information:
http://www.nc.univie.ac.at/index.php?id=6772.The successful candidate for the postdoctoral position is a behavioral
experimentalist with a strong theoretical background and experience in
performing behavioral experiments with pigeons. Well-developed programming
and technical skills to assist in the experimental setup, as well as
competence in video analysis and statistics are desirable. Reasonable
skills in English language are mandatory. Candidates should have a PhD in
Biology or Psychology. Arrangements have to be made for accommodation in
Vienna. Salary is competitive. Candidates must be able to work
independently and as part of local and program-based teams, promoting
integration between research centers in Vienna, Bochum (Germany) and
Kingston (Canada).
Letters of application including a CV, publication list and a statement of
research interests should be sent to Dr. Ludwig Huber, from whom further
details are available. Postal address: Department of Neurobiology and
Cognition Research, University of Vienna, Althanstrasse 14, A-1090 Vienna,
Austria. Applications by email are particularly welcome
